Ra:tio, a new cafe in Hyderabad, offers an immersive experience that invites you to linger and savour every moment

In the green pockets of Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, Ra:tio offers a serene counterpoint to its buzzing surroundings. The Japandi-inspired cafe, designed by Val Atelier with landscapes by The Pinewood Studio, flows seamlessly between indoors and outdoors, pairing open volumes, warm woods, and soft hues to create moments of calm while naturally fostering a sense of community.

Spanning 4,500 sq ft, the cafe – once a family home with low ceilings and thick walls – has been transformed into a light-filled retreat. Vaishnavi Linga of Val Atelier was tasked with a simple brief: to create a space that feels functional, soothing, and memorable. In response, she immediately opened it up, introducing a double-height ceiling, a mezzanine floor and tall glass windows to frame the outdoors. While maintaining structural stability and a sense of spaciousness within the existing constraints posed a challenge, it’s one you’d never notice once inside.

Stepping past the 12 foot-tall glass doorway, the ambience is entirely meditative. At one side, a soaring grid set against textured walls captures your attention with its collection of artisanal kettles. On the other, a long bench sweeps the wall, forming a sunny spot for unhurried conversations. With multiple types of seating: cosy wooden nooks, central communal tables, and high stools along a thin counter on the mezzanine, the cafe accommodates everything from quiet solo moments to lively group gatherings. Anchoring the back is a 16-foot timber counter, serving as the hub for coffee and baked goods orders and glowing under the warm radiance of the overhead grid lighting. The grid motif unfolds across the floor, walls, and ceiling, creating a measured rhythm that ties the space together. Even as the cafe hums with constant activity, earthy materials such as the slate roof, wooden accents, and limestone flooring, all rendered in soft latte shades, evoke a sense of peace and tranquillity.

Cocooned by tall areca palms, the outdoor experience, which comprises nearly a third of the cafe’s area, mirrors the calm of the interiors with open spaces dotted with pinewood and concrete seating. Landscape designer Meghna Dulani Gehenwar of The Pinewood Studio has thoughtfully carved shaded pockets and grassy patches, ensuring the outdoors is welcoming and inclusive – free of barriers or steep slopes – so movement flows easily for all.

Like the perfect cup of coffee, where grind, heat, and brewing time align, Ra:tio strikes a harmonious balance of design, materiality, and natural light. Each of these ratios is carefully calibrated to support ritual and community, making the entire experience as smooth and satisfying as your favourite brew. @at.ratio
