Aman New York

Aman New York reshapes the grandeur of a Manhattan landmark into a space where design slows the pace and elevates the senses.

You enter from 57th Street, but it feels like you’ve crossed into another world. The city of Manhattan is just outside, yet within these walls the atmosphere is measured, grounded, and calm. At Aman New York, everything from material to proportion is tuned to help you breathe differently. Set within the historic Crown Building, the hotel builds on a century of grandeur but shifts the focus inward. Architect Jean-Michel Gathy retains the structure’s soaring bones while layering it with rich textures and natural finishes. Stone, oak, cinnamon-toned woods, and hand-crafted elements draw you in, never pulling attention, only shaping it. There’s rhythm here, but no rush.

The suites tell their own story. Rice paper–framed louvre doors allow the space to expand and contract depending on mood. Soft panels glow from within. A mural inspired by the artwork italicise – PineTrees by Hasegawa Tōhaku spans the walls, adding flow without formality. Even the bathtub, the fireplace, and the windows feel like they belong together. Design choices are never loud, but they are firm. The spa, carved into the centre of the building, is spread across three levels. Curved timbers, marble, and shifting light lead you from movement to rest. The 20m pool, edged with stone and warmed by a fire feature placed within a shallow reflective basin, anchors the space. A glass roof above slides open when weather allows, creating a terrace that works through the seasons.

Dining follows the same cues. Nama, offering seasonal Japanese cuisine, is sculpted around a Hinoki wood counter and ceilings that step back in planes, drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright. Arva, the Italian restaurant, is divided into intimate sections by planting and wine displays, allowing openness without exposure. Light, reflection, and tactile materials guide the experience from plate to setting.
Throughout the hotel, art is part of the architecture. A fibre canvas by Joseph Borde, coloured with saffron and turmeric, sits beside stone. Sculptural bamboo forms float in the atrium. A hand-modelled piece by Domingos Tótora grounds the arrival. Each piece adds depth without distraction. What Aman New York achieves is a sense of clarity. Materials feel chosen with care, and spaces unfold at a comfortable pace. In a city driven by speed and scale, this hotel offers a different kind of luxury – one shaped by restraint, craftsmanship, and attention to how people move, pause, and inhabit their space. aman.com
