Maximalist Manifesto

Ornate yet intuitive, this home by Disha Subramanium moves fluidly between maximalist expression and everyday rhythm

Most of everyday living is a myriad of moments, many unfolding at once. A home that reflects this simultaneity invites you to move through them with ease, rather than simply pass by. Built on the tenets of neoclassicism and interpreted through a contemporary lens, this 15,000 sq ft residence in Delhi by Disha Subramanium is conceived as an immersive experience – one that wraps itself around the rhythms of its inhabitants. “Spaces should anticipate a family’s instincts before they articulate them,” notes Disha, embracing a maximalist philosophy of abundance, layered narratives, and eclectic curation to craft a home that feels as expressive as it does alive.

Disha describes the homeowners as having an innate appreciation for both fine details and the finer things in life. This sensibility translates into a home that feels elegant yet playful, and at moments, gently open to the unexpected. From the very first step, the entrance lobby establishes a sense of groundedness – its inlaid grey floor drawing one in toward the mandir, a unique reimagination of what a spiritual space can be.

From here, a passage with mouldings pulls you inward, towards a spiral staircase crafted in dramatic Panda White marble. The space grows progressively richer in material and mood as it opens into the living room. A luminous bar sits on the left – its chocolatey wood tones and rich onyx backdrop punctuated by a gleaming brass countertop. At the other end, the dining room comes alive against a sweeping, lush hilltop mural inspired by the delicate world of miniature paintings. The jewel-box powder room, which Disha has a special affinity towards, deserves special mention. “It feels like a fantastical forest vignette – an unexpected burst of green drama tucked into the middle of the home,” she says. Upstairs, the energy softens. The wood-wrapped study and intimate bedrooms foster a sense of focus and restoration.

Throughout, the home brims with character while being attuned to the movements and rituals of daily life. Its foundation is one of texture – marble, mosaic, metal finishes, and natural veneers layered with velvet, suede, silk, and plush upholstery, then enriched further by embroidered trims, tassels, and hand-knotted carpets. From this tactile base, decorative artworks, floral motifs, sculptural accents, atmospheric lighting, and a magnanimous sense of scale allow the interiors to bloom well beyond their classical origins into something wholly their own.

Disha calls the home a fundamentally bespoke project, and rightly so. Almost each element – from the cornices to the furniture – is custom-designed, each painstakingly made exclusively for the home. The 900-piece ceiling installation in the living room is a one-of-a-kind composition assembled directly on site. “This hands-on, iterative process made the final result just so personal and unique to the home,” she notes.
Beyond its material richness and bespoke detailing, what the home ultimately achieves is an understanding of how life actually unfolds for the family. Its expansive spaces are fluid without feeling unanchored, rising to each occasion while inviting the family to inhabit them instinctively. In that sense, it fulfils its original promise – “a home that feels timeless, elegant, and emotionally resonant, while remaining relevant to the way the family lives today.”
